What's new on Fyndling?
July 2026
❄️ “Winter is coming” - the first Christmas markets are rolling in - it's still high summer, but the first dates for the cold season are already on the map: classic Christmas markets as well as historic Advent and winter markets. And to match the season, you can set the map to Winter or Winter-night mode right away to get in the mood. If you plan far ahead, you can start finding your dates now.
📜 More recipes from the “Haus- und Arzneibuch” (Karlsruhe, c. 1445) worked through - for more dishes from this collection there are now hands-on kitchen notes: what kind of dish it actually is, what matters when you cook it today, and how it relates to similar recipes from other manuscripts. A “game in pepper sauce” (Wildbret in Pfeffersauce) leads you straight to its relatives in other cookbooks.
🤖 AI assistants can now search for you directly and report events - if you use an AI assistant in your browser, it can now access Fyndling data directly: “Find me medieval markets nearby” or “Put together a camp-kitchen menu for me” works without the detour through a results list - new events can be reported this way, too. Currently only in recent Chrome versions, an experimental feature.
🌤️ Weather forecast in the event details - if an event takes place within the next 7 days, we show a short preview right in the popup: temperature and chance of rain at a glance.
🌗 Map mode: Auto, Summer, Night, Winter, Winter night - the map now adapts its colors and mood to the time of day and the season, including its own Winter-night look for the cold, dark season. Can also be chosen manually.
✨ Interface reworked - the event list, category filters, search and event details are tidier and easier to use on mobile.
May 2026
🏰 New start page with navigation menu (beta) - Fyndling now has its own start page as the first port of call: a menu with all categories, recipe sources and pages - the map only opens on request. The new design is being refined continuously; occasional display issues are still possible in this first version.
🦞 Rhine Franconian cookbook (~1445) - the first cookable edition. A hidden Middle Rhine manuscript with 76 recipes. It has been scholarly edited since 2021 in the academic CoReMA edition (Böhm/Klug, University of Graz, FWF project) - we now make it cookable for the first time at fyndling.de/rezepte: with a modern translation, ingredient lists, tips for today's kitchen and scan display in the browser. For now the first 10 recipes. Highlights: Lenten fritters with nuts and figs, fish “Krepplin” with little sausages and Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), crayfish pepper broth like a Sauce Américaine 450 years before Escoffier, summer aspic from pike scales (the collagen trick of the modern gelatine industry), and the famous barbel-roe warning of 1445. 66 more recipes to follow.
📚 Now over 1,500 recipes from 14 historical cookbooks in total, with its own “About this book” page for each source.
🎵 Radio BOB! Mittelalter Rock - the station now plays directly on the map.
📚 Recipe database with search - full-text search, filters by dish, protein, suitability for fasting and source. The collection keeps growing.
